Random Thoughts and Music
Author: Dia- I hate surprise parties. If you want to be my friend, never throw a party for me. Ever. I will not forget and I will not forgive.
- I think it’s cute that some reviewers think writers look at bad reviews, study the criticism, and then use the lessons learned from the criticism to suck less when writing their next book. Absolutely adorable.
- Speaking of bad reviews, to all the reviewers who don’t like Bleeding Violet, but who think I have talent and are looking forward to my next book, don’t bother. It’s just more of the same sex and violence and surreal crap that turned you off in the first place. Try a Sisterchicks novel instead–those are sweet and wholesome, and when you turn the last page, the story will not linger in your mind or derange it with disturbing thoughts or imagery. You have been warned.
I haven’t done a Music Monday in a long time. I’m in a mood to celebrate the bizarre, and who’s more bizarre than Grace Jones? She’s this scary/beautiful supermodel from the 80s who’s been in movies, but is also a singer. She even sings in French–that’s how badass she is. This song isn’t in French; it IS creepy and strange though, and I’m kind of into it right now.

My friend sat next to Grace Jones at HBO’s Golden Globe after party last weekend and said she’s as bizarrely awesome in person as she seems!!

Sooooo jealous of your friend! Wish I had the balls to embrace my weirdness as thoroughly as Grace does.

I love your attitude towards reviews–can you imagine if authors followed every reviewer’s advice? Books would be sludge. Too many cooks would spoil the story, and anyway authors aren’t meant to make books that are “perfect,” but to perfect how they express themselves, or something like that. No books are perfect, because that’s boring, and the more someone hates a book, the more someone else loves it.

“Authors aren’t meant to make books that are “perfect,” but to perfect how they express themselves.” I like that, Chels.
People are hitting me with great quotes left and right these days.

Lol, I get your point. After all, I hate having people to tell me what to do and if I saw a negative review I would be hurt at first but I think I would appreciate the honesty (and if it’s a tip about how teens don’t talk the way I think they do, I might take that tip into account) but I don’t really know since I’m not a writer.
Creepy but interesting song. The first itme I learned about Grace Jones was when I watched the bond movie starring her. I really liked it and it was nice to finally see a Black person in one of the movies. I did think she was a bit crazy but i admire her daringness (is that word? haha)

I would never presume I am telling a writer how to get it right in a review. Reviews are for readers, not writers!

P.S. I did once tell a writer (per e-mail, not publicly) one eensy, teensy bit of advice that might make her sequel even more awesome than her first book, and she was so royally pissed off, that I have never tried such an act of hubris again. Lesson learned!

Did you see your review at The Book Smugglers? Excellent. You deserve it.
